Hafiz, a secret Sufi, came to prominence in his day as a writer of love poems. That love transformed into an all-consuming passion for union with the divine. In The Gift, Daniel Ladinsky bestows on us the impassioned yet whimsical strains of Hafiz's ecstasy. Never forced or awkward, Ladinsky's Hafiz whispers in your ear and pounds in your chest, naming God in a hundred metaphors. I once asked a bird, "How is it that you fly in this gravity Of darkness?" She responded, "Love lifts Me." Like Fitzgerald's version of Khayyam's Rubaiyat, the language of The Gift strikes a contemporary chord, resonating in the reader's mind and then in the heart. Ladinsky's language is plain, fresh, playful--dancing with an expert cadence that invites and surprises. If it is true, as Hafiz says, that a poet is someone who can pour light into a cup, reading Ladinsky's Hafiz is like gulping down the sun. --Brian Bruya

“There are universes inside Hafiz, a lineage of masters. Daniel Ladinsky follows the playfulness; the rascal moves well.” —Coleman Barks

Let thought become the beautiful Woman.Cultivate your mind and heart to that depthThat it can give you everything a warm body can.Why just keep making love with God’s child ?When the Friend Himself is standingBefore us so open-armed ?My dear,Let prayer become your beautiful LoverAnd become free,Become free of this whole worldLike Hafiz….!This guy, plus Dan Ladinsky, his translator/arranger, has saved thousands of souls from shipwreck, I'm sure! The poem above, of all of them, saved me the best, thought being the one thing I could still experience when I had lost sensation and feeling. I could train my thought to become beautiful and then follow that beauty where it would take me. Which is here : mmm beautiful, luscious, tingly.
As a great lover of Hafiz, I love this book and have given it as a present again and again to friends.
Es ist zu emfehlen so ein supper und wertvolle Buch. Ich habe es zuerst als Geschenk gekauft und danach für mich selbst. Vielen Dank.
To make a long history short: this is not Hafiz. It's a great hoax which has already fooled enough people, earning the fraudulent author money he does not deserve. Ladinsky has written all the poems, but he claims they were "handed him in a dream" (in English!) by Hafiz ... Obviously that was still not enough inspiring, for Ladinsky has even stolen a famous poem by Rumi (who actually was a Sufi master ' Hafiz wasn't, they belonged to two different cultural and religious traditions) claiming that it is the work of Hafiz! This book could be a perfect illustration of what our modern world's failures in cultural communications are very much about: the global ignorance of people who think (or want others to think) that they are encouraging peace and harmony and human dialogue, by in fact demonstrating their total disinterest in anything than but the exotic and superficial. It's orientalism in its worst form.
At last Hafiz has found the modern voice he needed . Dan Ladinsky's renderings have (in my opinion) for the first time, made all the marvel and wonder of this poet known as "The Tongue of the Invisible" available to a contemporary audience. I have known the poetry of Hafiz for years, but couldn't quite crack it. Dan has done a tremendous service to lovers, and poetry lovers everywhere. "The Gift" is just that. It's a book to be carried along, and to have at hand at all times. These renderings reach out in a magical way and bring Hafiz to life right now, so that his wisdom and compassion come to life in the life of the reader. These poems touch the root of love, joy, and compassion that lies at the heart of the universe, and the individual. My heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in this project. I wish I could give "The Gift" to everyone.
A true gift. In the span of a sentence, Hafiz can restore the conscious awareness of a Loving Creator. His words are sustanance for the soul.
